Winter Walks: Protecting Paws, Gear & Safety in Snow and Ice
Winter walks don't stop for snow — but winter conditions can be tough on your dog and their gear.
Snow, ice, slush, and salty sidewalks all add extra stress to everyday walks. A little prep goes a long way in keeping winter adventures safe and comfortable.
Protect Their Paws 🐾
Booties or paw balm (like Musher's) help protect paws from ice, salt, and cracking. If you know sidewalks aren't treated with paw-safe salt, it's best to avoid them when possible. At home, we only use paw-safe salt to keep our dogs safe.
If your dog steps in salt without booties, be sure to wash and fully dry their paws when you get home. Wet paws can trap bacteria and often lead to hot spots, so drying completely is key.
Use Gear Made for Extreme Weather ❄️
Cold temperatures can make cheap hardware brittle. That's why our handmade collars use extreme-weather buckles — so if your dog spots a squirrel and bolts, the buckle won't snap in the cold. Most big box store collars use low-grade plastic buckles that are more likely to break in winter conditions.
Our collars are designed to handle real cold, wet adventures — durable, easy to clean, and built to last. Shop Extreme Weather Dog Collars
Don't Forget Your Hands 🧤
Cold weather makes hands tense up, which can lead to leash burn. A padded dog leash adds comfort and control during winter walks — especially on icy or snowy terrain.
