A Guide to Finding the Perfect Fit For Dog Harness

A properly fitting dog harness is an essential tool for any pet owner. Not only does it provide safety and control during walks, but it can also prevent injury to your furry friend. However, finding the perfect fit can be a bit tricky. Here's what you need to know to ensure your dog's harness fits just right.

  1. Measure your dog's girth The first step to finding the right size harness is to measure your dog's girth, which is the widest part of their ribcage. Use a soft tape measure and wrap it around your dog's chest just behind their front legs. Add two inches to this measurement to allow for breathing room.

  2. Check the straps Once you've found the right size harness, make sure the straps are adjusted correctly. You should be able to fit two fingers between the straps and your dog's skin. The harness should fit snugly, but not too tight that it restricts your dog's movement or breathing.

  3. Positioning is key The positioning of the harness is also important. For a front-clip harness, the leash attachment should be located in the center of your dog's chest. This type of harness is ideal for dogs that pull, as it helps redirect their attention and control their movements. On the other hand, a back-clip harness is best for well-behaved dogs that don't pull. The leash attachment should be located on the back of the harness, just behind the shoulders.

  4. Test it out Once you've adjusted the harness, it's time to test it out. Take your dog for a walk and observe how the harness fits and functions. If the harness slides around or rubs against your dog's skin, readjust the straps or try a different style.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure your dog's harness fits comfortably and provides the necessary support and control during walks. Don't forget to check the fit periodically, especially as your dog grows or gains/loses weight. A proper fitting harness is essential for your dog's safety and well-being.
