Time and Supplies Needed
This recipe is quick and easy, taking just about 45 minutes from start to finish:
- Prep Time: 15 minutes
- Cook Time: 20-25 minutes
- Cool Time: 5 minutes
Supplies You'll Need:
- Muffin pan (for 6 mini pies)
- Rolling pin or similar tool (a smooth bottle works too!)
- 2 Mixing bowls (one for crust, one for filling)
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Non-stick surface for rolling dough
- Grease or oil for the muffin pan
Ingredients for Dog-Friendly Pumpkin PieFor the Pie Crust
- 1 cup spelt or whole wheat flour
- 1 egg
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened applesauce
For the Filling
- 1 cup pumpkin puree (plain, not pie filling)
- 1/3 cup unsweetened Greek yogurt
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional, based on your dog’s taste preferences)
Step-by-Step Instructions ( watch the video below)
- Preheat Oven: Start by setting your oven to 350°F to warm up.
- Mix the Filling: In a bowl, combine pumpkin puree, Greek yogurt, egg, and cinnamon. Mix until smooth, then set aside.
- Prepare the Dough: In another bowl, mix flour, egg, and applesauce until it forms a ball of dough. If it is too wet add a little bit more flour at a time. You should be able to touch the dough with your finger and not doug sticking to your fingers. Different brands of applesauce/pumpkin will have a different consistency.
- Roll Out the Dough: Roll out the dough on a non-stick surface. Use a mug or cookie cutter to cut out six circles. If using a rolling pin, be sure to coat it with a little bit of flour first and also some of the surface you are working on. I like using the silicone mats because it is not as messy.
- Form the Crusts: Grease a muffin pan and press the dough circles into each cup, shaping them into crusts. Thick enough but not too thin.
- Add the Filling: Spoon the filling into each crust. Tap the pan gently to release any air bubbles.
- Bake: Place the pan in the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the crusts are lightly golden. Place them on a wire rack to cool down.
- Cool: Remove the pies from the oven and let them cool for about 5 minutes before serving.
